Peggy Coverdale Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, in memory of a past Ambassador, is awarded annually to a deserving 4-H member who is continuing their education at a post-secondary institution.

Peggy Coverdale was born in 1960. Throughout her life she was very dedicated to the 4-H program along with everything else that she did. Peggy was a long time member of the Teulon Beef Club and was very strong in the 4-H program. She was also one of the first Manitoba 4-H Ambassadors. This is why the Manitoba Ambassadors set up a scholarship to help people like Peggy to realize their goals.

When Peggy died on June 14, 1985 at the age of 25, she was waiting for a liver transplant that could save her life. She had discovered her liver aliment when she had broken her arm. Before she found out about her disease she worked as a journalist. While Peggy was at the University Hospital in London, Ontario she had told her mother and father, Betty and Allan, that she had planned to organize a Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) when she got well. Unfortunately Peggy never got to realize her dream, but her mother worked hard to see her daughter's dream become reality. On May 9, 1988 the Canadian Liver Foundation Manitoba chapter was reality.

Liver disease is one of the most common causes of death among adults. The liver is one of the largest organs and is also very important, it serves three functions:

  1. It synthesizes nutrients so that the rest of the body can use it for nutrients,
  2. Converts waste material from organs into a form that can be excreted by the liver and the kidneys
    and,
  3. Helps to protect the body from bacterial infection
